A Festive Season in Civita and Bagnoregio

For the holidays, Civita and Bagnoregio are gearing up to offer their best. There are many reasons to spend some time in the suspended village over the Valle dei Calanchi and in the surrounding area. Various Christmas initiatives are in store.

The Living Nativity Scene

After two years of hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Living Nativity Scene returns, organized by the volunteers of the Red Cross section of Bagnoregio and Lubriano. The representation is back with all its magic, starting at sunset on December 26, 2022, and on the dates of January 1, 6, 7, and 8, 2023.

A Spectacle of Tradition and History

The iconic bridge, suspended in the void and surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of Valle dei Calanchi, is a must-pass. Then comes access to the ancient village, built on a tuff spur, giving a vivid sensation of having gone back in time. Ten different scenes, like pieces of a mosaic, reconstruct the days of Jesus' birth. The Arabian suq, the Roman castrum, Herod, noble residences, the Bedouin tribe, artisans at work, the Magi, shepherds, the lazaretto, and of course, the Nativity itself. A blend of colors, emotions, and beauty.

Enchanting Christmas Markets

The Pro Loco of Bagnoregio APS organizes the 2022 Christmas Markets along the streets of the marvelous historical center of Bagnoregio leading to Civita di Bagnoregio. Following the opening on December 8, the initiative continues on December 18 and 26, 2022, and January 1 and 6, 2023, from 10 am to 8 pm. On Sunday, December 18, at 5 pm, Santa Claus will arrive for all the children.

The Splendor of Devotion - 'The Majolica of Bagnoregio'

On the first floor of Palazzo Alemanni, more than seventy exhibited works are gathered together for the first time, aiming to represent an important chapter in the territory's history. The work of study and research, as well as the exhibition's curation, were entrusted to archaeologist Luca Pesante.

Tracing Historical Elegance

The territory of Bagnoregio played a central role in ceramic production in the Central Italy market for two centuries (16th and 17th centuries). This "greatness" has been lost to memory, although traces remain. The meticulous work of archaeologist Luca Pesante has allowed the weaving of the fabric of a unique story.

Treasures of Devotion on Display

The exhibition showcases 17th-century devotional plaques, featuring raised reliefs of the Madonna with Child, as well as round sculptures/models like the San Martino from the Santa Cristina Church in Bolsena, crafted by the masters of Bagnoregio. Visitors can see a series of ex-voto maiolica tiles from the Cathedral of San Donato, the Madonna delle Grazie of Civitella d’Agliano, and the Tessennano parish.

Celebrating Cultural Heritage

The exhibition 'The Majolica of Bagnoregio. Forms and Colors of Devotion' aims to be a significant communication effort for the candidacy of the Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio as a World Heritage Site, with a focus on promoting cultural heritage and historical significance.
